Being part of the European Community is somewhat more than being a player in one of the world’s biggest market places. The European Union (EU) was formed after the Second World War to secure trade between European nations and prevent conflict. It is based on the idea that democracies which trade with each other do not go to war against one another. History tells us that this premise is correct.
